Over 80 years of nurturing land and livestock at Humphreys Farm

Sam and Kate Squier

“The perception of beef cattle and their effect on the environment needs to be fairer. Local grass-fed beef can actually have a positive impact on the environment it’s in, as well as turning plants into a nutrient rich source of protein.”

Our farming methods

Holistically managed

Our pastures are managed to promote biodiversity and soil health. By constantly monitoring the pasture and adjusting our grazing practices to match the needs of the land and the cattle we are able to maintain a balanced ecosystem that provides our animals with optimal nutrition.

Mob grazing

By mimicking the natural behaviour of herds in the wild, grazing concentrated groups for short periods before moving on to new pasture, we can improve soil health, enhance plant diversity, increase root depth and sequester more carbon into the ground.

Herbal leys

These blends consist of legumes, grasses, and herbs that boost biodiversity, root depth, and nutrient uptake. Herbal leys offer a sustainable solution for improving pasture ecosystems, enhancing animal welfare, and benefiting the environment.

Legumes

A mix of legumes to fix Nitrogen, improve soil fertility and create plenty of food for bees, butterflies and other critters.

Grasses

Highly palatable forage for the cattle and seeds for the birds. Grasses that are more resilient to drought, damp and frost.

Benefits of our approach

Cattle

Fertilise the soil and manage the pasture. Trampled plants and roots become worm food and in-turn improve soil structure.

Herbs

A group of soil improving herbs that promote biodiversity and create a nutritional balance for the cattle.

Traditionally reared turkeys

Turkeys are a huge part of the farm all year round – from breeding, to egg-laying and then to rearing. We’ve had turkeys on the farm for over 30 years now including the infamous KellyBronze which has been gracing our customer’s Christmas tables for the last 12 years.

We’re proud to free-range our turkeys in woodland, pasture and their personal favourite – stinging nettles. A natural habitat for the turkeys and full of enrichment with day-long foraging. Rearing them to maturity with a traditional method means a happier bird and tastier more nutrient-rich turkey.

Aberdeen Angus Cattle

We’ve come a long way since 2007 when Sam brought home six cows to the farm and no where to put them! Our exclusively grass-fed Aberdeen Angus herd live a happy life – bred and born on the farm and grown to maturity.

A farming family

Three generations of Squiers

Tom and Eva Squier moved to Humphreys Farm in 1939 with 12 cows and a bucket load of enthusiasm.
